  1. The official language of Costa Rica is Spanish. English is spoken at most tourist destinations.
  2. Costa Rica is located in Central America. It lays between Nicaragua (north) and Panama (south). It is bordered by both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean.
  3. Costa Rica is a tropical country, and it has two seasons: dry (December through April) and rainy (May through November). Costa Rica’s year round average temperature is 22° C (72° F) in the central valley.
  4. The capital is San José, and the 6 other main cities are: Cartago, Heredia, Alajuela, Liberia, Puntarenas and Limón.
  5. The official currency is the Colón, and $1 is equal to C530. The Exchange rate fluctuates everyday but the average rounds 500 colones per dollar.
  6. The country´s time zone is Central Standard Time (GMT-6).
  7. The nationwide voltage is 110-v.
  8. The water is safe to drink in the entire country. Our main wealth is water and Costa Rica has the best distribution system in Latin America.
  9. Even though most services in Costa Rica could be paid by credit or debit cards, it is a good idea to bring cash. Major credit cards are accepted including MasterCard, Visa, Discover and American Express.
  10. Wi-Fi, cable and Satellite TV are very common in the whole country.
  11. International calls require you to dial the country code first (506).
  12. Costa Rica has two International Airports: Juan Santamaria located close to San José, and Daniel Oduber International Airport, located in Liberia, Guanacaste.
  13. Among the entry requirements to Costa Rica are: valid passport, some visitors might need a visa.
  14. The sales tax is 13% and tips are included in the bill (10%), when you go to a restaurant.
  15. The Republic of Costa Rica is proud to have one of the oldest democracies in the continent, and it is one of the few countries in the world without an army.
  16. The population of Costa Rica is around 5.000.000 people and the size of the country is 51,100 square kilometers, roughly the size of West Virginia or Scotland.
